As some of you know, my company has an office in Nanning, but until today I didn't have a chance to visit. Well, now I'm here, and I want to tell you about it in this thread. (There are not many threads on 3rd tier cities without tourist attractions here, so my insights can be extrapolated to other cities that receive few foreign visitors.)

Flying in, what initially struck me was how green the landscape is... just like nice parts of Thailand.

Then, when I exited baggage claim, my second impression was -- man, there are a lot of people here. Since I live in one of the most populous cities in the world, this observation might surprise you, but I guess my point is that Shanghai has pretty good infrastructure for dealing with millions of people living on top of each other, whereas this place does not.

Third impression: construction everywhere and in excess. Again, I've lived through the construction booms in Nanjing, Shanghai, and Beijing -- the latter two arguably being the largest in the history of the world. But, these guys are basically rebuilding their entire city in 100 acre plots.

Fourth, the presence of western brands here is scant in comparison with tier 1 and tier 2 China. I was already prepared for this, but seeing it person has really resonated with me. Basically, 6 million people, many of which have lots of money, and they don't have access to the same LV bags that the rest of China covets. In other words, the big brands spend 90% of their marketing budgets beating each other up in Beijing and Shanghai, while completely ignoring this virgin soil.

That's all for now. I'll try to get out and take some pictures tonight.

So, I moved to the states in January and I just cashed out the remaining points I had on a business class round trip ticket to Toronto in July.

Now, I never questioned this but I just realized that Aeroplan probably assumes that I booked this ticket as a Canadian resident when in actuality I live in the states.

I feel a little bad about it -am I doing something wrong? Is it against the rules to use your remaining Aeroplan points if you haven't lived in Canada for awhile?

Next question: What's a good American points system?

Thanks!

Is there an option whereby I can not take the outbound - but have my companion take the outbound - and then both of us take the return on Sun as planned? My initial reaction is, if i don't take the outbound, the return for me, if not both of us, will be canceled.

At this point the only option i see is to fly PHL-SFO on Wen night and turn back to ATL on Thur which is no bueno.

One of the options UA site gives me is connecting from TG475 arriving SYD at 6:35, connecting to MEL at UA 839 some hours later for the SYD-MEL leg. AFAIK united does not have 5th freedom rights on this route (SYD-MEL), however as it is part of an international ticket under the same booking, it would be a valid itinerary right?? (timing is perfect for me)
Txs a lot!!

Hi all,
I have a question that I need help with.

Yesterday I booked a ticket DFW-ORD-AUH-ISB on American and Etihad flights through a travel agent. The agent booked an S class ticket (according to American airlines customer service) and quoted around 1500 dollars. I called American airlines customer service and asked them about their fare quotation and they quoted me around 2300. Through experflyer.com, I was able to find an N class availability for a different date with a quotation of 1900 something from customer service. I asked them why the rate was different than travel agent and they could only tell me about price matching and so on. What's going on here ? Do agents get a discount on their bookings. Are they booking with Etihad rather than american and that is causing the fares to be cheaper. I need to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for all your help in advance.

MODS: I did a search and could not find a thread related to this new build hotel, please consolidate if I'm wrong.

I recently stayed at this new hotel, which opened in October of 2012. The hotel is also vacation club (which means it's some type of timeshare), other smarter FT'ers, can share what that means. But a new property and part of the Hilton family I thought I'd start a thread so others can share their experiences as I have mine.

I stayed here in May 2013 for two nights, I had booked a Queen Fireplace Room, and that is exactly what I received. I did ask if there was a better room available and the agent said I was in a very nice room. Once I saw it I would sort of agree, it was a nice room, but based on the website there are nice ones including 1 and 2 bedroom suites with full kitchens. That being said I was not disappointed, but hoped as a diamond I would get some kind of upgrade. I don't know for sure if the hotel was 100% full but based on the light activity I saw, I would think it was not full.

The hotel itself was very nice, modern and very clean. What would you expect from a 7 month old hotel. The location near the top of the Canyon's Resort in Park City offered a good location with great views of the mountains and the valley. I've got to imagine in winter or summer this area is hopping.

The rooms are nicely appointed, with granite counter tops, kitchenettes, balconies with seating, sofas, two TV's and well-designed bathrooms and lots of woodwork. Even though my room was small to midsize it was well laid out and very comfortable.

As for the hotel it was also nice too, and had a really great lodge feel. The lobby was large with some seating and could be a nice meeting place for friends. What it did lack was a bar or food area. It did have a free coffee bar with a few nice options and a LARGE fireplace, so for that I give it a thumbs up.

Amenities wise it has an outdoor pool, hot tub and gym. Although I saw the pool, I didn't run buy any of the other amenities. What it was missing was a restaurant or convenience store so if you wanted food, go someplace else and no room service. In a resort that may not feel like a big deal, but if you wanted food you'd need to go to the Hyatt or one of the three close by restaurants (if they are open).

Below are a few pictures of the room and of the lobby, if you want to see more pictures check out my Blog.

I have read from all posters here that the biggest disappointments are not the CX flights themselves, but the MPO benefits itself that make them jump ship or thinking about jumping ship. Also, with *A and ST becoming more and more powerful year after year, and OW being pretty stagnant, perhaps CX-FTers can collectively write an annual "We would recommend..." letter to CX for their considerations? FlyerTalk has a good reputation of people being here are real frequent business travelers, not some high school kid living in mama's basement with too many times on their hands.

I would think something like this will be good for CX to read and consider, and who knows, maybe even act on our recommendations.

Perhaps someone should take the lead on this.

My daughter was flying in Business today, on a SkyMiles award ticket, connecting through Detroit to LAX for a China Southern departure to Guangzhou, and then on to Hong Kong on a separate ticket.

Her first flight to Asia, and DL mechanical issues in Detroit delayed her LAX departure 4 hrs, which would have caused a missed connection on to China and HK. Initially, the best DL could do was a rerouting that would get her to HK 2 days late (after her travel companions would already have departed HK for Macau).

After intervention by a DM family member, they booked her on a direct flight tomorrow afternoon (Detroit-HK) and improved the arrival delay by a day, routing her through Tokyo, and then to HK.

And to top it off--DL sent her bag to LAX anyway, and has given no indication of when she could expect to have her bag. They provided a hotel in Detroit, but she has no clothing change, no toiletries, etc.

If this happened to you, what would you expect from Delta, as far as (1) baggage delivery, and (2) a gesture of goodwill/compensation in the form of a travel voucher or SkyMiles credit? Also, at what point should Delta provide for replacement of clothing/personal items? I have experienced luggage delay on Delta partners (Air France) and baggage personnel in France were quite accommodating, providing temporary clothing replacement on the spot and eventual bag delivery to a remote French village on a timely basis.

The thought of her marinating in the same clothes from Wednesday to Monday is disconcerting, to say the least.

--Many thanks

The reason is that I will be traveling with a pet who will be checked and we have to make a connection and I hope to be able to look out the window and see him loaded to be sure he is on the plane! So I need to know which side I should choose for my seat.

Thanks for any tips.

I have been having some discussion with the powers that be here on FT about how we might work together on making it easier for new posters to get access to what some people find to be the annoying posts that crop up over and over again.

The idea is that we get some some very simple links set up to answer some very common questions.

To also help people see this information is there and avoid the annoying posts, I suggest we have something that attracts ones atention to the fact there is a load of good information only a click away when you get to this forum.

Then we could have say the top ten most common asked questions.

ie;
Waitlisting
Connection times
Economy seating
Business class seating
First class seating

These then would then open up a whole string of Q&A similar to what you get on any good company website. I think British Airways actually do a good job at this.

Look forward to hearing people thoughts.
